The division landed across Utah Beach France on 19 Jul 44 and assembled at Le Mesnil on 25 Jul 44. It was committed through the 8th Inf Div to clear the heights near Le Bingard on 27 Jul 44 and CCA secured a bridgehead across the Sienne River near Pont de la Roche 29 Jul 44. On 31 Jul 44 CCR overran Granville and the division moved to Avranches where it relieved the 4th Armd Div and secured the area bridges. The division swung into Brittany on 1 Aug 44 and closed on Brest 7 Aug 44 while destroying a German force at Plouvien 8-9 Aug 44. While CCA invested Brest. CCB and CCR relieved the 4th Arm Div at Vannes and Lorient. respectively 12-15 Sep 44. The division then moved to relieve the 35th Inf Div of protecting the south flank between Orleans and Auxerre on 2 Sep 44. CCA was reheved in the Lorient sector by the 94th Inf Div on 13 Sep 44. and CCB relieved the 4th Armd Div at Luneville on 19 Sep 44. The division attacked 8 Oct 44. crossed the Seille River 9 Nov 44 and mopped up the Nomeny area despite mud, mines, and congestion.
The division established bridgeheads across the Nied Frangaise River against strong opposition on 11 Nov 44 at Sanry, and CCA cleared Arraincourt on 13 Nov 44. The division reached Maderbach Creek at Remering with CCB by 25 Nov 44 after fierce fighting through mud, mines, and craters. CCA pushed through the Foret de Puttlange but fell back on 26 Nov 44 and CCB was unable to get tanks through the mud along the Maderbach. The division was relieved in this area 2 Dec 44 and patrolled to the Saare River 5 Dec 44, taking Sarreguemines vdth the 35th Inf Div the next day. It then maintained defensive positions near Saarbruecken.
In response to the German Ardennes Counteroffensive, the division was given responsibility for the sector south of the Sauer River between Ettelbruck and Mostroff on 27 Dec 44, The division was heavily engaged in the Mageret-Wardin area east of Bastogne commencing 31 Dec 44, being forced to withdraw by German attacks until 8 Jan 45 when it counterattacked to recover lost ground in its sector. On 10 Jan 45 the 4th Armd Div attacked through its lines, and the next day the division took over the attack toward Bras. CCA captured Wardin 12 Jan 45 and CCB cleared Mageret 13-14 Jan 45. The division fought house-to-house in Oubourcy 15 Jan 45 and seized Moinet and Hill 510 on 20 Jan 45. Weiler fell 22 Jan 45 and Kalborn fell —after an unsuccessful previous attack — on 29 Jan 45. The division then took over a new zone west of the Our River on 4 Feb 45, and assembled at Kalborn 6 Feb 45.
The division attacked across the Our River at Kalborn and Dahnen on 7 Feb 45 and by 9 Feb 45 armor was crossed over the Bailey Bridge there. It relieved the 17th A/B Div 10-11 Feb 45 as CCB maintained the Our Bridgehead, and then renewed the offensive into the West WaJJ on 20 Feb 45. The penetration of the West WaJJ was marked as Ober Eisenach fell 22 Feb 45, and the final objective town of Muxerath was cleared 24 Feb 45. The division then moved to a new zone west of the Pruem River and reheved the 90th Inf Div 25 Feb 45. CCA estabhshed a small bridgehead at Manderscheid which was enlarged as CCB, after being initially forced back across, took Lunebach on 28 Feb 45. The division reached the Nims and crossed near Schoenecken on 3 Mar 45 and the following day assembled in reserve in the Arzfeld area.
The division attacked 20 Mar 45 at Homburg and CCA reached the Rhine River at Rhein-Durkheim the next day. The division crossed the Rhine River at Oppenheim on 25 Mar 45 and CCA reached the Main River, coming under heavy antiaircraft fire from Frankfurt. The division estabhshed bridgeheads across the Main and was reheved on 27 Mar 45, attacking north of Frankfurt on 30 Mar 45. By 2 Apr 45 it completed crossing the Fulda River at Malsfeld and encircled Mulhausen 4 Apr 45. After Langensalza fell 6 Apr 45 the division consoHdated and then renewed its offensive 11 Apr 45 as it crossed the Saale River southwest of Naumberg. It reached the Zwick Mulde at Rochlitz on 14 Apr 45 and on 16 Apr 45 turned over its bridgehead there to the 76th Inf Div. The division maintained defensive positions along this river until hostilities ceased on 7 May 45. |
